Dain Sandoval is originally from San Diego, but has called Chico home since 1998. He has had an illustrious past in radio as the Program Director of 106.7 ZRock. He handles websites and technical work for Everyday Paleo‘s Sarah Fragoso. He began experimenting with Paleo while training with Robb Wolf in 2006. Dain was 220 pounds and wearing size 44 pants. He was also in a deep battle with alcoholism. He realized he had to change his lifestyle or likely be dead 30. Through practical application of Paleo living in addition to physical training and a program of recovery he says he now wears size 31 pants and is generally a nicer person to be around. He has been clean and sober since Feb 19, 2007.
I was sober for three years when I got pregnant the first time. I was also on mental health medications that I didn’t feel safe taking during pregnancy so I weaned off of them. They had never worked well anyway because I was wrongly diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Instead of seeking out better help and finding the right medications and right diagnosis, I demonized mental health medication and vowed never to use it again. I ended up letting go of my sobriety a year later and white knuckling through the ups and downs of my diseases (mental health and addiction) for the next decade.
I spent years trying every natural concoction for mental health. Juicing, smoothies, supplements, yoga, herbs, and some wild berry from some rain forest that claimed to be the cure all. There was no end to the lengths I would go to feel sane as long as it was “natural.” Every time I hoped the next thing would be the thing that would fix me, but it never did. I just ended up having severe mood swings.
This week we’re talking with James Gregory, known in the Ancestral Health world for his recipe sharing site Fastpaleo.com. James works as a Japanese interpreter and is an entrepreneur. After living a fast-paced, drug and alcohol addicted life for a time in Japan, he moved back to the states and got sober. When we first get sober, exercise is usually the furthest thing from our mind. We just want to avoid picking up that next drink or drug. As addicts and alcoholics, we tend to overcomplicate things or see things as only black and white. Yes, really! After some time sober, we start to think, “Ugh…I need to start exercising!” In our heads, we procrastinate thinking we need a lot of money for a gym membership or equipment to get started. We picture a big box gym like 24-hour Fitness with rows and rows of cardio machines, big burly men pumping iron and machines that we can’t imagine how to use. We think we need to huff and puff, sweating profusely to make any different in our health or fitness level. We just don’t know where to start! So instead, we do nothing.
