Let’s not kid ourselves, the holidays aren’t the “happiest time of the year” for recovering alcoholics and addicts. It’s the time of year when most relapses occur and some of us slip into our deepest depressions. Whether it’s past trauma, being triggered by family, or just the general change in weather and light, it’s a tough time for so many in recovery. What if there’s a better way? One that doesn’t involve self-medicating or relapsing. As a bonus, what if you could get through the holidays without adding those extra holiday treat pounds?
We’ve found a better way to cope with the holidays and we’d like to share these tips with you in the hopes that your holidays turn out to be merry and joyful (and most of all sober!)

Every year in the fall and spring many half and full marathon races take place in my city, forcing major roads to close down to one lane. Orange cones line the streets, while police officers man corners to prevent cars from potentially driving into runners. Tents with speakers and music blaring surround several mile markers with the intention of keeping the runners momentum going towards that coveted finish line.
Before we go any further, let me express my love and adoration to my friends and all of those recovering out there who have returned from the depths of hell to become law-abiding and contributing members of society and most of all cross finish lines they never thought possible in their darkest days of addiction. I am proud of the accomplishments you have made to better your lives and your health.
Having said that, I believe the current message in the recovery world of trading “bad” addictions for “good” ones, may not be supporting us in our quest to find long-lasting, optimal health in long-term recovery. Hopefully, I will offer some insight to those who have found solace after they put down the bottle or substances and traded the demons for that sought after, endorphin release affectionately known as the “Runner’s High”.

As my 30-year high school reunion quickly approached this summer, I was filled to the brim with ambivalence and negativity about attending. High school really was NOT my favorite thing, I didn’t enjoy it and I don’t have the fond memories some people often have. Many factors play into this sentiment, one of the primary reasons being that I moved around often as a child and high school was, by my count, the 10th school I attended. I recently had the chance to see the film The Anonymous People while attending the REEL Recovery Festival, a film festival dedicated to showcasing filmmakers who make honest films about addiction, alcoholism, behavioral disorders, treatment and recovery. I was excited since the movie was released in 2013 and I hadn’t yet had the chance to see it and I had received many recommendations from friends about it.
